“I hate it” he cried.

“Where will all the jobs for our kids be?” she questioned.

“We are losing jobs!” he protested.

“I like to deal with people, not machines!” he proclaimed.

These are just some of the comments I have received lately from people who are in a bit of an uproar with Amazon Go.

“I f@cken love it!” I proclaimed.

Do I care that all these minimum wage jobs as cashiers and customer service people will be lost. Nope. Do I care that technology will continue to take jobs away? Nope.

Before I get to deep into my explanation, here is the Amazon Go video, in case you haven’t seen it yet.


So why don’t I care? Because I look at what we are gaining, not what we are losing. What about the different jobs it will create? Who develops the technology? Who builds the stores? Who produces the products? Who markets them? We’ve made it easier for people to want to buy your products, services and talents. That’s awesome!

Many people can only see what we are losing, because it’s what they know. They don’t see what we are gaining.

We are so stuck on the FORM of jobs (what they look like), rather than FUNCTION of what it creates (what it does).

Ultimately, our education system is still designed to conform and condition people for jobs that wont exist in five years.

We need to cultivate the creativity of students and teach them to solve problems in the world…not prepare them for minimum wage jobs that won’t exist.

For example, if I told you five years ago I was going to turn my own car into a taxi and start driving people around for money, but not have to handle any cash or even have to pay for a taxi license to do it, you would’ve laughed at me! Look how many people are now making extra income (or it is their primary income) as Uber driver partners?

Open your eyes people. The world is changing. Standing their complaining about it isn’t going to stop it. Preparing our children (and ourselves) for a brighter, different world is what we need to do. We can’t always create the wave, but we can learn to ride it!

Let’s teach them to affect change. Otherwise we will have to teach them coping mechanism’s for being effected by change.

In the end, it is deep rooted consumer behaviour driving these changes. Umm that’s people demanding things that take today’s jobs away? Oh the irony.

Organisations need to innovate. That takes people. There will be jobs….just not as we know them today. Educate our people, not what they want to do, but what they want to contribute or problem they want to solve. Then help them to become the person who would do that.
